Actual Testimonial

(Work completed October 10th, 2008)
This is a recommendation for Brian Kubica of Kubica Home Weatherization, who spent several days testing my home for air leaks and finding effective ways to stop them. Brian is a self motivated and tenacious problem solver. He is careful and thoughtful, well trained, and has practical experience plugging leaky buildings. He is also an experienced construction manager on commercial and custom residential construction projects. His services under Kubica Home Weatherization are very affordable.

My story with Brian:
I have a late 1970's vintage wood and stone house. In 30 years, virtually every joint and seam has opened up due to shrinkage in the wood, settling, decay of the original caulking, etc. Brian attached a "blower door" device to the house, sealed up the obvious openings (windows, fireplace, doors, vents, etc) and measured about 1 "air change" per hour, which places my house on the leaky end of the air change scale. (A well-sealed house should have about .35 air changes per hour.) The blower door has a fan which sucks air out of your house making it easy to locate spots where unwanted air comes in; around windows, light sockets, cracks, joints, etc. After locating these areas, Brian methodically went around the house sealing each opening with combinations of weather stripping, caulk, spray foam, etc. until we attained a measurement of .6 air changes per hour.- a significant decrease of 40%. We expect this 40% decrease to translate directly to the energy cost for heating the house this winter. Sealing holes and cracks in a house is the most efficient and economical way to save energy and money.

Weatherization Success!
(March 11th, 2009)
I am seeing a 26% - 30% reduction in total KWH use this winter after having Brian Kubica weatherize my leaky old house. I also replaced an ancient refrigerator with a new Energy Star fridge. Thanks!

Hey guys, FYI, my 1/27-2/24 KWH use is down 38% from last year... (do you have weather data we can use to compare last year with this....cold days, avg temp, etc...so I can determine whether it is the weather or the Weatherization...?) I think the weatherization saves about the equivalent amount of electricity as the $70,000 PV array that Anson tried to sell me would generate- at about 5% of the cost. Oh my god, I am beginning to sound like Amory....
Cheers,
